Unathi conducting a symphony orchestra

Orchestral music has been part of Unathi Malunga’s life since childhood, first through piano and cello, then as an ensemble player, chorister, music student and, eventually, conductor. Her return to intensive musical study after building a legal career was not a change of direction so much as a return to the first discipline that shaped her.

Today, her orchestral work has four connected expressions.

As an orchestral conductor, she works in rehearsal and performance across symphonic, operatic and stage repertoire, continuing to deepen a professional practice grounded in score preparation, listening, clarity and musical purpose.

Through Orchestral Arts Africa, she is building a new orchestral-arts institution for artistic leadership and programming: one designed to serve opera, ballet, musical theatre, education, new music, emerging artists, conductor development, recording, screen work and international collaboration.

Her African orchestral work is concerned with repertoire, artistic networks, composers, institutions and the infrastructure needed for orchestral practice to grow on the continent.

Her international orchestral work focuses on professional participation, market access and sustained artistic relationships. The Baton Forward sits within this strand, documenting the rehearsal-room, professional and institutional work through which international conducting careers are actually built.

Across all four, the objective is the same: serious orchestral practice, stronger pathways, wider access and an African artistic presence that is not peripheral to the global orchestral conversation. This section brings together podium work, institution building, repertoire, artistic partnerships and the professional relationships required to move African orchestral practice into larger national and international spaces with authority.
