Unathi discussing a score with woodwind players

Conducting is one of the few musical professions in which access to the instrument — the orchestra — is itself a major barrier to learning.

Orchestral Arts Africa will build structured opportunities for conductors to rehearse real musicians, prepare substantial repertoire, receive specialist feedback and develop the practical artistic and leadership skills demanded by professional orchestral environments.

The long-term ambition is an African conductor initiative with fellowships, residencies, mentorship and international exchange — one that treats conductors as working artists and builds genuine pathways into professional orchestral life.
