Unathi working with dancers and musicians

Ballet and dance reveal the orchestra differently: through pulse, breath, movement, timing and physical architecture. Yet live orchestral accompaniment is often the first element lost when budgets tighten.

Orchestral Arts Africa will develop project-based orchestral capacity for ballet and dance, working with companies, choreographers, schools and independent producers on productions that can support live music at an appropriate scale.

The long-term aim is to create a reliable collaborative structure through which dance makers can plan with an orchestra in mind rather than treating live orchestral music as an unattainable luxury.
